Student badges released!

Today we are pleased to release a new zondle feature in the form of student badges.  Now you can reward your students for good effort by awarding them badges on zondle.

Badges come in a number of flavours:

  • Zondle badges. These are the badges that we have created.  If you want any more added to the collection we are more than happy to create them for you.  Just let us know what you’d like to see in there.

  • My badges. You can create your own badges to match the exact needs of your students.  Just upload a square image and zondle will do the rest for you.

  • My friends’ badges.  Instantly get access to badges your friends have created on zondle and use them to reward your students as well.

  • Other Teachers’ badges.  You can use any badges created by other teachers on zondle if you wish.  So as time goes on you should have access to a lot of possible badges!

The following video shows how you can award badges to your students.  One thing we missed in this video is that you can also award badges to students directly from the new gradebook.

We hope this is useful and, of course, look forward to any feedback you may have.

Over the coming couple of months we will be working very hard on the teacher and student experience on zondle.  Today we release the first of the new features for students.  Student home page personalisation.

Students can now quickly and easily select any colours they like for their home page and add background images.

In time we will be enabling purchase of these background images with the students’ zollars.

The following video explains how this new feature works.  Of course, we very much look forward to any feedback you may have.

·        See when you set the topic to the students
·        Copy the gradebook to your clipboard
·        Export the gradebook to csv, excel and PDF.
·        View progress for a student playing a topic
·        View progress overview for all students playing a topic
·        View progress overview for a student playing all your topics

Just roll over an item and and a simple tooltip will tell you what that item means in more detail.

The following video goes through the new gradebook in a little detail.

We hope this is useful and please do just let us know if you have any feedback.  Warmest thanks for your support!

Improvements to the teacher console released.

Over the last few weeks we have been busy thinking about ways we can make the teacher experience on zondle better.

Working closely with teachers to establish exactly what was needed we have made a number of changes to make life easier.

Today we release phase 1 of these changes.  Improving the teacher console.

Phase 2 will be the release of a totally new grade book system to make it much easier to see student progress, but we still have a little work to do on that.

Here is what the revised teacher console now looks like:

We hope you enjoy this new layout and look forward to hearing how you get on. :-)

zondle Team Play Christmas Edition released!

How about bringing a little excitement to your classroom this year with the newly released zondle Team Play Christmas Edition?

To make things easy for you (we like to do that where we can) we have created a topic for you to use out of the box.

How much to your students know about Christmas in other cultures?  We certainly learned a few things writing this topic!

Of course if you join zondle for FREE you can create any topic you like to play in the zondle Team Play Christmas Edition.  It works like any other zondle Team Play game.  So you can just carry on teaching your students what they need to know, but with some Christmas fun attached.

Oh, and I nearly forgot to say.  This is much more than just a quiz.  zondle Team Play has a solid foundation in neuroscience research.  So you can be sure that as well as being great fun, it is an effective teaching method.

For more information about zondle Team Play please see our “guideto using 'zondle: Team Play'”.

zondlescape 027 zondle Team Play event -
live video stream!

Dear colleague,

zondle Team Play event - live video stream!

As you might have seen in a previous zondlescape, tomorrow (Wednesday, November 28) we will be hosting an event all about zondle Team Play, with Dr Paul Howard-Jones of MBESC (Centre for Mind and Brain in Educational and Social Contexts) at Bristol University.

zondle Team Play

The good and bad news is that the event is now full, but hopefully you will still be able to participate! With the nights drawing in (in the northern hemisphere at least) what could be better than curling up with your computer and watching a live video stream of our event?

So, if you would like to watch the live video stream (fingers crossed!), please visit at 17.00 hours GMT (that's 5.00 o'clock tomorrow evening, Wednesday November 28, UK local time).

The event will be introduced by Wayne (our Director of Education), who will briefly introduce zondle. And then Dr Paul Howard-Jones, one of the UK's leading 'neuroscience in education' researchers, will tell us about the research (such as 'uncertain rewards') that led to the development of zondle Team Play.

Paul will also be leading a live demonstration of zondle Team Play (they'll be a few places available for our international audience to get directly involved) and will show us how Team Play can best be used in the classroom.

Hope to see you there! Please do email us if you do watch the stream, and we'd also love to read your comments!

Did you know? Whole-class and whole-school uploads.

Did you know that you can easily give groups of students (whole classes or even schools) access to zondle, without having to enter names one at a time?

All you need to do is download and copy your students into this Excel spreadsheet, then send it to zondle and we do the rest! All we need is a username for each student that you and they recognise (for eSafety reasons, we don't need real names or email addresses). You can even include multiple teaching groups and the teachers' names.

Alternatively, use the zondle student organiser interface to set up a teaching group, and send the access code to your students. When they then log in using the code, they'll automatically be placed in your class.

Click here for a video about importing your school data into zondle.

Thanks as ever for your fantastic support!

Zollars leaderboards released!

We always get asked about zollars and what they are for.  Well the simple answer is that there hasn’t been anything to do with them until now.  We will, in time, add loads of things that you can do with your zollars, but as a start point today we released the zollars leaderboard.

Students just click on the “leaderboard” item on their homepage and they will see their classmates and the number of zollars that each of them has.

Teachers click on their zollars at the top of the home page and they will see the zollar leaderboard for their students.

Hopefully this is fun and please do just let us know how you get on.

zondle Chrome app released

We know that many of your students are using Chromebooks or use Chrome as your browser and so to make your lives easier today we release the Chrome app for zondle.

You’ll find the zondle Chrome app in the Chrome store.

We may look at using OpenID for authentication when we have had feedback on how the app is being used and if we deem it appropriate, but for now you just use your normal zondle username and password.

This quick video shows how to install it to your Chrome apps start page.

We hope this is useful and, of course, any feedback is most welcome.

Dear colleague,

We hope your term is going well and that the run up to the holiday period is lots of fun!

This week we are very pleased to be able to tell you about our new zondle Packs for French, Mandarin and Latin GCSE (all the vocabulary your students need to help them prepare for their exams) and about our new ‘add questions from existing topics’ feature!

New! zondle Packs for test and exam preparation.

You can now purchase GCSE languages zondle Packs for French, Latin and Mandarin. These Packs are closely based on the GCSE specifications and have been verified by experts. They’re perfect for games-based learning vocabulary acquisition.
  • All the vocabulary from the GCSE OCR French, Latin and Mandarin syllabuses (more languages and exam boards coming soon).
  • Students can play and practise small sets of vocabulary in any of zondle's 50+ games so they keep coming back for more!
  • Students can also play the vocabulary in our FREE mobile app (iOS and Android) so they can revise on the go!
  • The topics can also be played in zondle Team Play for whole-class vocabulary learning.
  • Progress reporting enables teachers to identify which students are putting in the time and who needs additional support.
  • With prices starting from £2.49 for an individual licence and £24.99 for an annual school licence, these are some of the best value vocabulary resources available today!
  • Includes free 'starter Packs' so you can see how they work!
You can find out more about these new zondle Packs on the new zondle Marketplace.
zondle Marketplace
Please note that, apart from these optional new expert-generated zondle Packs, the core zondle remains free and always will be!

New! 'add questions from existing topics'.

It’s always been possible to copy and amend topics made by other users. Now you can quickly build your own topics by adding questions from your other topics, your friends’ topics or your students’ topics - all with a simple click!

In our all-new speedy ‘edit topic’ interface, click the ‘add questions from existing topics’ button. Then you can choose a topic, drill down to the questions, and add any of them to your own topic. Quicker topic building, using the best questions around, and with much less effort!

Add questions from existing topic

Why not ask your students all to create their own questions around your current classroom topic (which could be an excellent learning opportunity as they consolidate their knowledge)? Then you can 'merge' their best questions into a single class zondle topic for your students to play and practise, and to share with users from around the world!

Click here for a video about the new ‘edit topic’ interface and about adding questions from existing topics.

Did you know that you can easily give groups of students (whole classes or even schools) access to zondle, without having to enter names one at a time?

All we need is a username for each student that you and they recognise (for eSafety reasons, we don't need real names or email addresses). You can even use this second Excel spreadsheet to include multiple teaching groups and the teachers' names.

Alternatively, use the zondle student organiser interface to set up a teaching group, and send the access code to your students. When they then log in using the code, they'll automatically be placed in your class.

Topic Merging released!

One thing that has been asked for frequently as a feature on zondle is that ability to merge questions from one topic into another.  Today we are delighted to say that this can now be done.

The following video explains how this works:

Friday, 16 November 2012

New question entry interface released!

Today we release a new version of the question entry interface.  You'll recognise many of the layouts for the question types that you use, but we have revamped the way that the code works behind the scenes to make your experience significantly faster and more streamlined.

The new interface makes it easier to find what you need by breaking down the question types into categories.  Expand your area of interest and you'll find the most commonly used question types.

When you select your question type you'll notice that the question entry is now done in the same window.  This gives more space to work.

The currently selected question type is shown in the title bar of the window and you can just click "change" at any time to change your question type.

Next time you click "add question" zondle will remember the question type you previously selected so that you don't have to select it again.

We have also removed the games from appearing automatically as this was putting people off.  Instead now you just click on "show games" when you wish to try your questions in a game.

Behind the scenes the code is a lot lighter, so you should find the experience much faster.  We look forward to hearing how you get on!

Announcing the release of the new ‘zondle Packs’!

Following lots of requests from zondle users, today we’re pleased to be able to announce the launch of our new zondle Packs!

zondle Packs are collections of zondle topics and other resources, created by zondle-approved subject experts and partners.

Some zondle Packs will be designed to match specific curriculum requirements. Others will address a particular examination board’s syllabus. The key thing is that, because they’ve been created by zondle-approved experts, you can always be sure that zondle Packs are of the highest quality.

The topics in zondle Packs can be played on the main zondle website and in the zondle iOS and Android mobile apps (a new zondle Pack compliant iOS app is due any day now). To find zondle Packs, please just use the usual zondle search tool on the website or in the mobile app.

While zondle and the zondle mobile apps are free and always will be, there will be a small charge to access some zondle Packs.

Our sister company tutor2u have developed a comprehensive range of zondle Packs to complement their core subjects (business studies, economics, and history). These will be released over the coming weeks, and can be played on the zondle website or in the new tutor2u app (which is powered by the zondle platform, and will be available on Android already and iOS any day now).

If you are a subject expert and would like to create your own zondle Packs, or if you would like your own app powered by the zondle platform, please contact me:

Organise your topics and easily share resources with zondle Folders released today!

Today we are delighted to release zondle Folders.  This new feature on zondle comes as the result of many people asking for a folder system for better organising topics.

We’ve gone one better (with a LOT more cool stuff to follow by the way) and included resource sharing so that you can easily upload resource files and share them with your colleagues via Twitter, Facebook, TES or email.  Use these resources in class and have all your teaching materials in one place.

We will soon enable these uploaded resource files to be shared with students as well, but we have some rather exciting mobile enhancements to do first.

The following videos give you a quick overview of all the features of zondle Folders to get you started.  As always your feedback is very welcome.

zondle Mobile v2 released - any topic, any game, anywhere

UPDATE: zondle mobile is now available for Apple iOS devices.

Imagine: you’re thirteen years old, you’re on your way to school, and when you get there you’re going to have a French vocab test. Of course, you’ve done a bit of revision... but time's running out and you’d rather be playing a game.

That’s where the vision for zondle started. Imagine that same student sitting on their bus playing games AND preparing for their vocab test, all at the same time!

It was this concept that most excited me personally - any school topic, any zondle game, anywhere.
  • You’re standing at the bus stop, play on zondle Mobile.
  • You’re waiting for a friend, play on zondle Mobile.
  • Class is about to start, play on zondle Mobile.
A few minutes here and there. All good fun of course, but learning what you want to learn (or what your teacher has asked you to learn) at the same time!

We are delighted to be able to announce that this is now a reality. Today we release the new zondle Mobile platform on Android, with iOS coming as soon as we’re through the Apple submission process.

We’ve built zondle Mobile from scratch creating a totally new experience (whilst learning from our previous mobile app).

zondle Mobile comes packed with new features:
  • Lightning fast (uses hardware acceleration)
  • More games (with audio and voice)
  • Ability to create teacher, student, and parent accounts
  • Score logging & statistics (results available on main zondle site)
  • My favourites
  • Topics my teacher has set me
  • Support

zondle Mobile also supports a variety of zondle question types:
  • Multiple choice
  • Question and Answer
  • True or False
  • Click the missing word
  • Statements

Click here to watch the zondle Mobile platform videos.

Any feedback is, of course, very welcome.

Zondle mobile - performance preview - Space Destroyer game

This video introduces the final game that we are developing for the initial release of the new zondle mobile app.  It illustrates the speed improvements that we have made.

The mobile app supports openGL rendering and full GPU accelleration.  This game uses particle systems and physics to create a modern take on an arcade classic.  Performance seems to be just as good on Android devices and is smooth on iPhone as well as iPad.
